129 - సాంబనికి సూర్యప్రతిమ ప్రాప్తి
మహారాజా! ఈ విధంగా సూర్యదేవుని వరాలను పొందిన సాంబడు పరమానందభరితుడై అన్య తపస్వులతో కలిసి చంద్రభాగానదిలో స్నానం చేయడానికి వెళ్ళాడు. స్నానం చేస్తూ శ్రద్ధగా తన హృదయంలో మండలాకారుడైన సూర్యభగవానుని భావిస్తూ సూర్యనారాయణుని ప్రతిమనెలా తేగలను. ఎక్కడ స్థాపించగలను అని ఆలోచిస్తుండగా అతని కనులకు ఒక అత్యంత దేదీప్యమానమైన ప్రతిమ నదీతలంపై కొట్టుకుంటూ తనవైపే వస్తూ కనిపించింది. అతడు వెంటనే ఇది శ్రీసూర్యనారాయణ ప్రతిమే. అనే నిశ్చయానికి వచ్చేశాడు. వెంటనే దాని నందుకొని తన వెంటరాగా మిత్రవనంలో ఒక చోట విధిపూర్వకంగా స్థాపించాడు.
ఒకరోజు సాంబడు ఆ సూర్యప్రతిమకు ప్రణామం చేసి ఇలా అడిగాడు. ‘నాథా! మీ ఈ ప్రతిమ నెవరు తయారు చేశారు? ఈ ఆకృతి చాలా సుందరముగా వుంది. దయచేసి చెప్పండి’.
ప్రతిమ నుండి సూర్యుడు మాట్లాడసాగాడు. ‘సాంబా! పూర్వకాలంలో నా రూపం ప్రచండ తేజోమయమై దుర్నిరీక్ష్యంగా వుంటే దేవతలంతా నన్ను సర్వప్రాణులూ సహించగలిగే రూపధారణ చేయవలసినదిగా ప్రార్థించారు. నా ఆదేశం మేరకు మహాతపస్వి విశ్వకర్మ (నాదేశించగా నతడు) శాకద్వీపంలో చక్రం తిప్పి నా తేజస్సుని మళ్ళించాడు. అతడే కల్పవృక్షం నుండి కర్రను గ్రహించి నా ఈ సులక్షణ ప్రతిమను తయారుచేసి నేను నీకోసం కోరగా చంద్రభాగానది ద్వారా, నీకు పంపించాడు. సాంబా! ఈ స్థలం బహుసుందరం, కడు శుభకరం. ఇక్కడ నా సాన్నిధ్యం అన్ని వేళలా వుంటుంది. మిగతాచోట్ల ఏదో ఒకపూటే వుంటుంది.’ అని చెప్పి ప్రతిమ సాంబని అనుగ్రహించింది.

The narrative arc that will run through Chapters 72–129 begins here with the curse of the terrible sage Durvāsas upon Sāmba, the son of Kṛṣṇa and Jāmbavatī. Sāmba, in a moment of youthful arrogance, mocks the nude, ash-smeared Durvāsas in the presence of his companions. The enraged ṛṣi's curse is immediate: Sāmba will be afflicted with leprosy, his beautiful golden body covered with the lesions of the disease. The grief-stricken Sāmba, realising the gravity of his offence, prostrates before Durvāsas and begs for a remedy. Durvāsas — whose curses, once given, cannot be recalled — nevertheless points to the path of redemption: only Sūrya Bhagavān, the divine physician, can heal what the curse has afflicted.
