Summary of chapter 42 of the Bhavishya Purāṇa is as follows:
The philosophical discussion deepens to its most metaphysically fundamental level: if Ātman is one, and if all jīvas are manifestations of the same Brahman, then the distinctions of varṇa cannot ultimately reside in the soul itself. The brāhmaṇya, it is argued, is not in the physical body — which is born of two parents and returns to dust — but in the accumulated tapas-energy of the subtle body. This subtle-body tapas can be cultivated in any birth. A Vedically learned śūdra who lives in perfect dharma thus carries a more brāhmaṇya-rich subtle body than a birth-brāhmaṇa who squanders his inheritance in vice. The chapter is remarkable for its intellectual courage in pursuing the philosophical implications of Advaita metaphysics into the domain of social dharma.
