181- षष्ठी तिथिके व्रत
अग्निदेव कहते हैं-
अब मैं षष्ठी सम्बन्धी व्रतोंको कहता हूँ। कार्तिकके कृष्णपक्षकी षष्ठीको फलमात्रका भोजन करके कार्तिकेयके लिये अर्घ्यदान करना चाहिये। इससे मनुष्य भोग और मोक्ष प्राप्त करता है। इसे 'स्कन्दषष्ठी व्रत' कहते हैं। भाद्रपदके कृष्णपक्षकी षष्ठी तिथिमें 'अक्षयषष्ठी व्रत करना चाहिये। इसे मार्गशीर्षमें भी करना चाहिये। इस अक्षयषष्ठीके दिन किसी भी एक वर्ष निराहार रहनेसे मानव भोग और मोक्ष प्राप्त कर लेता है ॥ १-२॥
इस प्रकार आदि आग्नेय महापुराणमें 'षष्ठीके व्रतोंका वर्णन' नामक एक सौ इक्यासीवाँ अध्याय पूरा हुआ ॥ १८१ ॥

The Janmāṣṭamī vrata—Kṛṣṇa's birth celebration on Bhādrapada-kṛṣṇa-aṣṭamī when the Rohiṇī nakṣatra falls at midnight—is described in full liturgical detail. The observance dissolves the sins of seven previous births through a single day's upavāsa. The pūjā sequence involves āvāhana of Kṛṣṇa, Balarāma, Devakī, Vasudeva, Yaśodā, and cows; the arghya is offered with the formula "yajñāya yajñeśvarāya"; at midnight the deity is bathed in streams of gudha, ghṛta, and kṣīra with Vedic mantras. The annual observance of Janmāṣṭamī protects the devotee from the punnamā-naraka and grants entry into Goloka.
