26 - అథ ముద్రాలక్షణమ్

నారదుడు పలికెను :-

దేవతాసాంనిధ్యాదులను కలిగించు ముద్రల లక్షణమును చెప్పెదను. హృదయమునకు సమీపమున కట్టబడిన ఆంజలి మొదటి ముద్ర. రెండవది వందని. మూడవది హృదయానుగ.

ఎడమచేతి పిడికిలిని బొటనవేలు పైకినిలచి ఉండునట్లును, (అంజలి) కుడిచేతి బొటనవ్రేలు వంచిబంధించినట్లును (వందని) ఉంచవలెను. అట్లే. రెండు పిడి కెళ్ళ అంగుష్ఠములును పైకి నిలచి ఉండవలెను (హృదయానుగ). ఈ మూడును వ్యూహమునందు సాధారణము చలు. పరుసగా కనిష్ఠిక మొద లైన వాటిని విడువగా ఏర్పడిన ఎనిమిది ముద్రలు అసాధారణములు.

ఈ ఎనిమిది ముద్రలను పూర్వము చెప్పిన బీజములు ఎనిమిదింటికిని క్రమముగా వినియోగించవలెను. కనిష్టిక వరకును ఉన్న మూడు వేళ్ళను అంగుష్ఠముచేత వంచి, పైకి ఉండునట్లును, సంముఖముగాను చేసి నవమబీజమునకు వినియోగించవలెను. వామహస్తమును తిరగదీసి మెల్లగా పైకి వంచవలెను. ఆది వరాహముద్ర. అంగములకు వరుసగా ఈ చెప్పబోవు ఎనిమిది ముద్రలు ఉపయోగించవలెను. వామముష్టియందు ఒక్కొక్క వేలిని . ముణిచి చూపవలెను. పూర్వముద్రను వంచవలెను. దక్షిణహస్తమునందు కూడ ఇట్లే చేయవలెను. వామముష్టియందలి అంగుష్ఠము నిలచి. ఉండును. ఈ విధముగా చేసినచో ముద్రసిద్ధి కలుగును.

This chapter describes the religious observances to be performed on the day of Saṃkrānti — the sun's passage from one zodiacal sign to the next — with special attention to the Makara Saṃkrānti (sun's entry into Capricorn) as the holiest of all such transitions. The Purāṇa prescribes ritual bathing in sacred rivers or tirtha-s, worship of the Sun god with arghya offerings, performance of tarpaṇa for the ancestors, and charity (dāna) of sesame seeds, blankets, and food. The twelve Saṃkrānti-s of the year are enumerated with their specific virtues and recommended gifts. The chapter affirms that acts of dāna performed on Saṃkrānti carry the merit of a thousand ordinary dāna-s, and bathing in a tīrtha on this day cleanses sins accumulated over many lifetimes.
