Summary of chapter 88 of the Mārkandeya Mahā Purana is as follows:

To assist in the supreme cosmic war, the divine Śaktis of the devas manifest from their bodies as the Mātṛkās—Brāhmī, Māheshvarī, Kaumārī, Vaishṇavī, Vārāhī, Nārasimhas, and Aindrī—alongside Śivadūtī. When the demon Raktavīja enters the field, every drop of his blood touching the ground produces thousands of demon clones equal in strength. Mother Ambikā commands Goddess Chāmuṇḍā to open Her vast mouth and drink every drop of Raktavīja's blood as it falls, enabling the Mātṛkās to pierce the original demon until he falls lifeless.
