Vindhya Mountains

The Vindhya Mountains (Vindhya Parvata) are a sacred range in the heart of Bhārata. The four dharma-birds, the sons of Mandapāla, settled here after Śamīka Maharshi had raised them. The mountain stands near the waters of the Revā river, which is the Narmadā. The Mārkaṇḍeya Purāṇa describes it as a place of great natural purity and spiritual power.

Jaimini Maharshi came here to have his four great questions about the Mahābhārata answered. The mountain is the setting of the main dialogues of the first part of the Mārkaṇḍeya Mahā Purāṇa.

The place

The Mārkaṇḍeya Purāṇa describes Vindhya Parvata as the home of the four dharma-birds. They live in a mountain cave (kandara) on a peak near the Revā river, the Narmadā. The waters of the Revā flow close by, which makes the mountain a pure kshetra (sacred place).

As Jaimini draws near, he thinks of the beauty of the place: the pure, clear water, the scent of the forest, and the sound of the Vedas recited by the birds. (Mārkaṇḍeya Mahā Purāṇa, Chapters 2–3)

Jaimini’s arrival

Mārkaṇḍeya told Jaimini to seek the four dharma-birds on the Vindhya mountain. Jaimini set out on foot. As he walked, he thought about the teaching of dharma that a dying person’s speech and the fruits of his actions follow him, while his wealth, his kinsmen and all his possessions stay behind. This thought made him feel even more strongly how urgent his purpose was.

When he reached the mountain, he found the rocky face of the cave where the birds sat. They were glowing with all the jñāna (knowledge) they had gathered, and they were reciting the Vedas. (Mārkaṇḍeya Mahā Purāṇa, Chapters 2–3)

The cave on the Vindhya

The four birds sat in a mountain cave, on a rocky shelf (śilā-phalaka) on the Vindhya peak. There they recited the Vedas, lost in tapas (austerity) and jñāna. When Jaimini came, he found them like young brāhmaṇa boys sitting on a stone slab, shining with the knowledge they had gathered.

The birds welcomed him warmly and spoke of the grace of his visit: “Today the sight of your lotus-feet has come to us. Our life is a true life, our birth is fulfilled.” (Mārkaṇḍeya Mahā Purāṇa, Chapters 2–3)

Its place in the Purāṇa

The whole first part of the Mārkaṇḍeya Purāṇa is built around Vindhya Parvata. Mārkaṇḍeya’s direction to Jaimini to go there, Jaimini’s journey and his thoughts on the way, his arrival at the cave, the welcome of the birds, and the full answering of the four great questions all happen here or point toward this mountain. The Revā river nearby makes the place a tīrtha (holy place) as well. (Mārkaṇḍeya Mahā Purāṇa, Chapters 2–3)
