Tīrthas of Veṅkaṭācala

Veṅkaṭācala, the mountain of Bhagavān Śrīnivāsa, holds many tīrthas. The Veṅkaṭācala Māhātmya of the Skanda Purāṇa tells how each arose and what bathing there gives. The pages below describe them one by one.

Ākāśagaṅgā Tīrtha (Veṅkaṭācala)

Ākāśagaṅgā Tīrtha on Veṅkaṭādri is one of six tīrthas that give moksha; here Rāmānuja and Añjanā did their tapas.

Cakratīrtha (Veṅkaṭācala)

Cakratīrtha on Veṅkaṭādri is where Sudarśana cakra lives for ever, after it freed the gandharva Sundara from his rākshasa form.

Ghoṇa Tīrtha

Ghoṇa Tīrtha, also Phaṇa or Tumburu Tīrtha, is one of six moksha-giving tīrthas on Veṅkaṭādri, known for the frog freed by Agastya's words.

Jābāli Tīrtha

Jābāli Tīrtha on Veṅkaṭādri, by the Svarṇamukhī river, freed the brahmin Durācāra and the vetāla that held him, and removes pāpas that have no prāyaścitta.

Kaṭāha Tīrtha

Kaṭāha Tīrtha lies north of the Veṅkaṭeśvara temple on Veṅkaṭādri; a drink of its water with a mantra destroys brahmahatyā and other great pāpas.

Pāpanāśana Tīrtha (Veṅkaṭācala)

Pāpanāśana Tīrtha, north of Svāmi Pushkariṇī on Veṅkaṭādri, is a moksha-giving tīrtha that frees people from brahma-rākshasa possession and brahmahatyā.

Svāmi Pushkariṇī

Svāmi Pushkariṇī is the most sacred lake on Veṅkaṭācala, with Bhagavān Śrīnivāsa on its south bank and Bhagavān Varāha on its west bank.

Svarṇamukhī River

The Svarṇamukhī is a sacred river near Veṅkaṭādri in the south, brought down by Agastya's tapas from a portion of the Gaṅgā at Brahmā's command.

Veṅkaṭācala

Veṅkaṭācala is the golden holy mountain of the south where Bhagavān Śrīnivāsa dwells, with sixty-six crore tīrthas and seven peaks.
