138 - The Solar Dynasty

Hari said: 

1. I shall describe the lineage of kings and their exploits. From the lotus coming out of the navel of Vishnu arose Brahma. From Brahma's thumb rose Daksha. 

2-3. Daksha's daughter was Aditi, Aditi's son was Vivasvan. Vivasvan's son was Manu. Manu had nine sons--- Ikshvaku, Sharyati, Mruga, Dhrushta Prushadhra, Narishyanta, Nabhaga, Dishta and Shashaka. 

4. Manu had a daughter Ila of whom Budha (Mercury) begot three sons: Rajas, Rudra and Pururavas. Ila was transformed into a man named Sudyumna. Sudyumna begot three sons-Utkala, Vinata and Gaya. 

5. Manu's son Prushadhra became a Shudra due to cow slaughter. His descendant Karusha became a Kshatriya and a line of Kshatriya kings called Karushas sprang from him. 

6. Dishta's son Nabhaga became a Vaishya. His son was Bhanandana and Bhanandana's son was Vatsapriti. 

7. Two other sons were Pamshu and Khanitra. The latter became a king and his son was Kshupa. Kshupa's son was Vimsha and his son was Vivimsha. 

8. Vivimsha's son was Khaninetra. Vibhuti was his son. Vibhuti's son was Karandhama and his son was Avikshita. 

9. Marutta was his son and he begot Narishyanta. Narishyanta's son was Tamas and his son was Rajavardhana. 

10. Rajavardhana's son was Sudhruti and Nara was Sudhruti's son. Nara's son was Kevala whose son was Dhundhuman. 

11. Vegavan was Dhundhuman's son and his son was Budha. Budha had a son named Trunabindu and a daughter Ailavila. 

12. Trunabindu begot of Alambusha a son named Vishala; his son was Hemachandra; his son was Chandraka. 

13. Dhumrashva was the son of Chandra and Srunjaya was born of Dhumrashva. Sahadeva was the son of Srunjaya and his son was Krishashva.

14. Somadatta was the son of Krishashva and his son was Janamejaya whose son was Sumantri. These kings are known as Vaishalakas (because Vishala was their city).

15. Sharyati (Manu's son) had a daughter Sukanya who married the sage Chyavana, and a sun Ananta who had a son named Revata. Revata had a son Raivata and a daughter Revati. 

16. Dhrushta (another son of Manu) had a line of descendants who became Vaishyas. 

17. Nabhaga (another son of Manu) had two sons Nedishta and Ambarisa. Ambarisha had a son Virupa whose son was Prushadashva. 

18. His son Rathinara was a great devotee of Vasudeva. 

19. Ikshvaku (another son of Manu) had three sons Vikukshi, Nimi and Dandaka. Vikukshi became known as Shashada because he ate a rabbit. 

20. Shashada's son was Puranjaya and his son was Kakutstha. His son was Anenas. Pruthu was the son of Anenas. 

21. Vishvaratha was the son of Pruthu and Ardra was Vishvarata's son. His son was Yuvanashva. His son was Shravasta. 

22. Bruhadashva was his son and his son was Kuvalashva. His son Drudhashva became famous as Dhundhumara. 

23. He had three sons named Chandrashva, Kapilashva and Haryasva. Nikumbha was the son of Haryashva and his son Hitashva.

24. Hitashva's son was Pujashva and his son was Yuvanashva. Mandhata was his son whose son was Bindumahya. 

25. He had three sons Muchukunda, Ambarisha and Purukutsa. He had fifty daughters whom the sage Saubhari married. Yuvanashva was Ambarisha's son and his son was Harita. 

26. Purukutsa begot of his wife Narmada the son Trasadasyu. Anaranya was his son and he begot Haryashva.

27-28. His son was Vasumanas whose son was Tridhanva, Trayyaruna was his son whose son Satyarata became famous as Trishanku who begot Harishchandra. Rohitashva was the son of Harishchandra. 

29. Harita was his son. His son was Chanchu and Chanchu's son was Vijaya. Ruru was born of Vijaya and Vruka was his son 

30. The successor and son of Vruka was Bahu whose son was Sagara. 

31. Sagara begot of his first wife Sumati sixty thousand sons and of Keshini the second wife the only son Asamanjasa. 

32. Amshuman the scholar was his son and Dilipa was his son. His son was Bhagiratha who brought Ganga to the earth. 

33. Shruta was Bhagiratha's son and Nabhaga was his son. His son was Ambarisa and Sindhudvipa was his son. 

34. Ayutayu was the son of Sindhudvipa and Rutuparna was his son. Sarvakama was Rutuparna's son and his son was Sudas. 

35. Sudas's son became famous as Mitrasaha who begot of his wife Damayanti the son Kalmashapada. 

36. His son was Ashvaka whose son was Mulaka. His son was the king Dasharatha whose son was Ailavila. 

37. His son was Vishvasaha whose son was Khatvanga. His son was Dirghabahu whose son was Aja. 

38. Aja's son was Dasharatha who had four sons the valiant Rama, Lakshmana Bharata and Shatrughna. 

39. Rama's sons were Kusha and Lava. Bharata's sons were Tarksha and Pushkara. Lakshmana's sons were Chitrangada and Chandraketu. 

40. Shatrughna's sons were Subahu and Shurasena. Kusha's son was Atithi and his son was Nishadha. 

41. Nala was the son of Nishadha and Nabhas was the son of Nala. Pundarika was the son of Nabhas and his son was Kshemadhanva. 

42. His son was Devanika whose son was Ahinaka. Ruru was his son whose son was Pariyatra. 

43. Dala was the son of Pariyatra and his son was Chhala. Vuktha was the son of Chhala and his son was Vajranabha. Gana was his son. 

44. Ushitashva was the son of Gana and Vishvasaha was his son. Hiranyanabha was his son. His son was Pushpaka. 

45. Dhruvasandhi was his son and Sudarshana was born of Dhruvasandhi. Sudarshana's son was Agnivarna whose son was Padmavarna.

46. His son was Shighra whose son was Maru. Prasuśhruta was the son of Maru and his son was Udāvasu. 

47. Udávasu's son was Nandivardhana whose son was Suketu. His son was Devarāta whose son was Bruhaduktha. 

48. Bruhaduktha begot Mahavirya whose son was Sudhruti. His son was Dhrushtaketu who begot Haryaśhva. 

49. Haryaśhva's son was Maru whose son was Pratindhaka. His son was Kruti whose son was Devamidha. 

50. His son was Vibudha whose son was Mahādhrusti. Křutirata was his son and his son was Maharomä. 

51. Svarnaroma was his son and his son was Hrasvaroma. Siradhvaja was the son of Hrasvaroma and his daughter was Sitä. 

52. Her brother was Kushadhvaja. His son was Bhanumån. Shatadyumna was his son whose son was Shuchi. 

53. Urjanámå was Shuchi's son and Sanadvaja was his son. Kuli was born of Sanadvāja and Kuli's son was Ananjana. 

54. Kulajit was his son whose son was Adhinemika. His son was Shrutäyu and his son was Supărśhva. 

55. Sruñjaya was born of him and Kșhemäri was his son. Anenas was his son whose son was Ramaratha. 

56. Satyaratha was born of Ramaratha and Upaguru was his son. His son was Upagupta whose son was Svågata. 

57. Svanara was born of him and his son was Suvarchas. His son was Supärśhva and Suśhruta was Supārshva's son. 

58. Jaya was born of Suśhruta and Vijaya was his son. His son was Ruta and Sunaya was the son of Ruta. 

59-60. Vitahavya was his son and Dhruti was born of Vitahavya. Bahulaśhva was his son and Akruti was his son. Two different lines started from Janaka who were said to be devoted to Yoga.
