24 - Worship of Tripura
Sūta said:
1. I shall now describe the most excellent worship of Ganas. Inferior deities attending on Shiva under the supervision of Ganesh1 which will yield everything, even heavenly bliss. The seats of the Ganas should be adored. He should worship the idols of the gañas and the lord of ganas.
1. He is the son of Shiva and Parvati, or of Pårvatl only, for, according to onc legend, he sprang from the scurf of her body. He is the god of wisdom and remover of obstacles; hence he is invoked and worshipped at the commencement of every important undertaking. He is usually represented in a sitting posturc-short and fat-with a protuberant belly, and four hands riding a mouse; and with the head of an elephant. This head has only one tusk. (SSED, P. 178; CDHM, Pp. 106-8).
2. Heart and other limbs should be assigned to Durga2 with Gām and other mantras. The sandals of the preceptor, the seat of Durga and her idol should be adored with the mantra-Hrim Durge Rakshiņi.
2. A name of Parvati, the second wife of Shiva (the first was Sati). (Vide aote on Devi CDHM, PP. 86-8).
3. With the heart etc. assignment should be made to the eight Shaktis3:- Rudrachanda, Prachanda, Chandogră, Chanda Nayikā, Chanda, Chandavati.
3. The active power of a deity is called Shakti, regarded a his wife. Shaktis may be eight or nine or even fifty.
4. Chandarupa, and Chandika with the mantra-Durga Durge'tha rakhsiņi. The Mudrás (mystic signs) Vajra, Khadga etc. shall be assigned to Shiva and others in the south-east,
5. Then SadaShiva, the lord of the big goblins and the lotus-scat also shall be worshipped.
Aim Klim Svah. Obeisance to Tripura Om Hram Hrim Kshem Kshaim Strin Skom torh Sphem Sphom Sham! the lotus-seat and the heart etc. of Tripura.
6. Then in the lotus-Pitha (altar) should be adored Brahmani, Maheshvarl, Kaumari Vaishnavi, Värahi, Indradevata.
7. Chamunda, and Chandika. Then the devotees shall worship the Bhairavas1. There are eight Bhairavas: Asitānga, Rura, Chanda, Krodha, Unmattabhairava.
1. Then are eight inferior forms or manifestations of Shiva, all terrific. (Set CDHM, P. 45).
8-9. Kapalin, Bhishana and Samhära. The devotee should meditate in his heart, in a mandala (diagram) with a lotus in side and triangular in shape, on these: Rati2, Priti, Kāmadeva3, the five arrows, Yogini, Vatuka, Durga, Vighnarāja, Guru and Kshetrapa.

10. By reciting for a hundred thousand times the names of Sukla, Varaksha sutra pustakabhaya samanvita (having the excellent Akshasutra, book, and offer of fearlessness in her hands) and havana (sacrificial offering) Tripura gives Siddhi (full achievement).
