7 - Worship of the sun etc.

Rudra said: 

1. Please narrate the details of the worship of Surya (the sun) and others as practised by Svayambhuva Manu and the rest. 

Brahma said: 

O Vyasa, this yields both enjoyment and salvation. Listen to it in brief.1

2. I shall explain the worship of the sun etc. that brings about virtue (dharma), love (kama) and other aims in life). 

3. Om obeisance to Surya's seat. Om obeisance to the solar form, Om Hram Hrim Sah obeisance to Surya. Om obeisance to Soma (the moon). Om obeisance to Mangala (Mars). Om obeisance to Budha (Mercury). Om obeisance to Bruhaspati (Jupiter). Om obeisance to Shukra (Venus). Om obeisance to Shanaishchara (Saturn). Om obeisance to Rahu. Om obeisance to Ketu. Om obeisance to Tejashchanda of fierce refulgence.

O Shiva, the various rites to the sun and others, namely asana (seat), avahana (invocation) padya, (water for washing feet), arghya (offering), achamana (water for sipping), snana (bathing! vastropavita (cloth and sacred thread), gandha, (scent) PuSPa (flowers), dhupa (incense), dipu (lamp), namaskara (obeisance), pradakshina (circumambulation) and visarjana departure (of deity) are to be performed by means of these mantras.

1. Name of a celebrated jewel obtained with thirteen other precious things at the churning of the ocean and suspended on the breast of Kronor Vishnu (SED P. 318.) 

2. Each of the ten directions, beginning with the cast, bas one guardian deity-namely, Indra, Agni, Yama, Nikruti, Varuna, Vayu, Kubera, Isha, Brahma and Ananta. The last two are for upward and downward directions respectively.

7. Offerings of the seat and other things to Lord Hari should be made, O Shiva, by means of these mantras. Now hear the procedure of worship to Sarasvati3 a power of Lord Vishnu. It is very auspicious.

The goddess of eloquence and learning who is opposed to Shri or Lakshmi, and sometimes considered to be the daughter and also the wife of Brahma, the proper wife of that god being rather Savitri or Gayatri. She is also identified with Durga, or even with the wife of Vishnu and of Manu and held to be the daughter of Daksha. [vide SP (AITM), p. 350, SED p. 1182).

9. Goddess Sarasvati's powers are: Shraddha (faith), Ruddhi (prosperity), Kala (arts), Medha (intellect), Tushti (satiation) Pushti(nourishment), Prabha (light), Mati (intelligence), those beginning with Om Hrim and ending with namah (obeisance). 

10. Om obeisance to Kshetrapala (the guardian of the field (the body). Om obeisance to the preceptors. Om obeisance to the grand-preceptors. 

11. Offering of seat etc. to Sarasvati seated on the divine lotus, and investiture with the sacred thread (yajnopavita) of Surya etc., should be performed by their own mantras.
