Kaustubha Maṇi

The Kaustubha Maṇi is a great divine jewel. It rose from the cosmic ocean during the Samudra Mathana, the churning of the ocean. It is one of the most precious ratnas (treasures) that the churning brought out. Bhagavān Vishṇu claimed it at once and placed it on his chest.

The Vishṇu Mahā Purāṇa understands the Kaustubha as the jewel of pure caitanya (consciousness). Its light means that self-shining awareness is the most precious thing in creation. Its place on Vishṇu’s heart shows him as the highest consciousness, from whom all other lights get their brightness.

Rising from the ocean

Mandara mountain turned inside the serpent Vāsuki, and the depths of the ocean were stirred. Many divine beings and objects came out of the waters one after another. The Kaustubha Maṇi was among the most splendid. Its brightness and purity were unlike anything in the three worlds.

As soon as it appeared, it was clear that the gem belonged to Vishṇu. Brahmā, the devas and all who were gathered knew it was rightfully his. Vishṇu took the Kaustubha and set it on his chest. It has shone there ever since as the chief mark by which he is known.

What it means

The Kaustubha is not only an ornament. It rests on Vishṇu’s chest, the seat of the heart and the centre of consciousness, and this carries deep meaning.

The gem came out of the ocean of all possibilities, which is Prakṛti (the cosmic source). The supreme Purusha received it and wears it on his heart. This shows that pure caitanya, consciousness, is the most valuable reality that exists. It belongs to Bhagavān Vishṇu because it is Vishṇu himself.

After the Samudra Mathana, the devas sang a stotra, a hymn of praise. In it they praised Vishṇu as “the lord of the Kauśtubha”. They saw the gem as a sign of his rule over everything that came out of the ocean of Prakṛti.
