Summary of chapter 28 of the Garuda Mahā Purana - Preta Khaṇḍa is as follows:
The Divine Master describes the eight supreme gifts known as Antyakāla Dāna, which should ideally be offered by a dying person or by their family members at the moment of departure. Bhagavān Vishṇu lists these sacred items as sesame seeds, iron, gold, cotton, salt, seven grains, land, and a milch cow, explaining the profound subtle symbolism and protective power of each gift. The Lord reveals that these eight gifts act as powerful spiritual shields, neutralizing dark entities, clearing obstacles along the path of Yama, and securing an auspicious path for the departing spirit. Bhagavān Vishṇu glorifies the magnificent Vṛshotsarga ceremony, explaining the profound cosmic significance of consecrating and releasing a young bull during the funeral rites or on auspicious lunar days. The Lord reveals that the bull symbolizes Dharma itself, and as it roams freely across grass lands, every grain of dirt lifted by its hooves grants thousands of years of celestial bliss to the performer's ancestors. The Supreme Lord declares that no gift equals Vṛshotsarga in its ability to permanently liberate spirits from ghosthood, wipe away severe family doshas, and bestow long-lasting prosperity.
