Śikshā

Śikshā, “instruction in Vedic sound”

Śikshā, the science of the right sounding of the Veda, is the first of the six Vedāṅgas (limbs of the Veda).

Among the fourteen vidyās

In the Brahma Parva of the Bhavishya Purāṇa, Sumantu tells King Śatānīka that the Purāṇa is adorned by the fourteen vidyās: the four Vedas, Ṛg, Yajus, Sāma and Atharvaṇa; the six Vedāṅgas, Śikshā, Vyākaraṇa, Chandas, Nirukta, Jyotisha and Kalpa; and Mīmāṃsā, Nyāya, Purāṇa and Dharma-śāstra. With Āyurveda, Dhanurveda, Gāndharvaveda and Artha-śāstra they make the eighteen vidyās.

In the pūjā of Brahmā

In the pūjā of Brahmā that Sumantu teaches, after the devatās of the intermediate quarters, pūjā is offered in order to Śikshā, Kalpa, Vyākaraṇa, Nirukta, Chandas, Jyotisha, the Upavedas and the Itihāsa-Purāṇas. Śikshā, Kalpa and Vyākaraṇa are always placed in front of the deity; the others are honoured in the quarters and corners.
