Six Names of the Samprāpti Dvādaśī

Samprāpti Dvādaśī Shaṇ Nāma, “the six names of the Samprāpti Dvādaśī”

The six names of the Samprāpti Dvādaśī are the names under which Bhagavān Vishṇu is worshipped, one each month, in the six-month Samprāpti Dvādaśī vrata: Puṇḍarīkāksha, Mādhava, Viśvarūpa, Purushottama, Acyuta and Jaya. Śrī Kṛshṇa gives them to Mahārāja Yudhishṭhira in the Uttara Parva of the Bhavishya Purāṇa.

The vrata

The six-month Samprāpti Dvādaśī is kept on the dark dvādaśī (twelfth lunar day) of every month, from the dark dvādaśī of Pausha to that of Jyeshṭha. In each month, in order, the devotee fasts and worships Bhagavān Vishṇu under one of the six names:

  1. Puṇḍarīkāksha, the lotus-eyed
  2. Mādhava
  3. Viśvarūpa, whose form is the universe
  4. Purushottama, the highest Purusha
  5. Acyuta, the one who never falls
  6. Jaya, victory

Then the vow is taken again from the dark dvādaśī of Āshāḍha and kept until Mārgaśīrsha, worshipping Bhagavān Vishṇu under the same names in order. Every month a brāhmaṇa is fed and given dakshiṇā, and oil and salty things are not taken.

The phala

Keeping this vrata for a year fulfils all desires, and at the end the devotee reaches the loka of Bhagavān Vishṇu by his grace.
