Uḍupa
Uḍupa
Uḍupa, with the printed gloss Āndhra, is one of the eighteen kingdoms of Bhāratavarsha. Sūta tells Śaunaka and the munis of Naimishāraṇya in the Pratisarga Parva of the Bhavishya Purāṇa that after Vikramāditya went to svarga, the land was divided into eighteen kingdoms, and Uḍupa is the fourteenth of them.
The eighteen kingdoms
Bhāratavarsha at that time was bounded on the east by Kapila-sthāna, on the west by the Sindhu river, on the north by Badarī-kshetra and on the south by Setubandha. In it were eighteen kingdoms, in order: Indraprastha, Pāñcāla, Kurukshetra, Kampila, Antarvedī, Vraja, Ajamera, Marudhanva, Gurjara, Mahārāshṭra, Draviḍa, Kaliṅga, Avantī, Uḍupa, Baṅga, Gauḍa, Māgadha and Kauśalya. Separate kings ruled these, the languages were different, and from time to time various teachers of dharma arose.
