Mahārāshṭra

Mahārāshṭra · mahā-rāshṭra, “the great kingdom”

Mahārāshṭra is a kingdom of Bhāratavarsha. The Pratisarga Parva of the Bhavishya Purāṇa tells that after Vikramāditya went to svarga, Bhāratavarsha, bounded by Kapila-sthāna, the Sindhu, Badarī-kshetra and Setubandha, held eighteen kingdoms: Indraprastha, Pāñcāla, Kurukshetra, Kampila, Antarvedī, Vraja, Ajamera, Marudhanva, Gurjara, Mahārāshṭra, Draviḍa, Kaliṅga, Avantī, Uḍupa, Baṅga, Gauḍa, Māgadha and Kauśalya. Separate kings ruled them.

The same parva tells that King Sevājaya, who increased the party of the devas and killed Navaraṅga, was born in Mahārāshṭra.
