Śamaśupāla

Śamaśupāla

The Pratisarga Parva of the Bhavishya Purāṇa tells that in the time when Mahārāja Saṃvaraṇa settled Pratishṭhānapura, the mleccha-line Śamaśupāla became ruler of Marudeśa. Sūta gives this to Śaunaka. The print glosses the name in a bracket as “one who keeps a beard”, and Marudeśa as Arab, Iran and Iraq.
