Kāmadā Saptamī Prayer
Kāmadā Saptamī Prārthanā
The Kāmadā Saptamī prayer is the prayer of three petitions the vratī offers to Bhagavān Sūrya, as Vibhāvasu, in the Kāmadā Saptamī vrata, also called the Sarva Kāmadā Saptamī. In the Brahma Parva of the Bhavishya Purāṇa, Brahmā teaches it to Bhagavān Vishṇu.
The setting
On the śukla saptamī of Phālguna the vratī, man or woman, keeps upavāsa, worships Bhāskara Deva, chants the name of Sūrya with bhakti, eats sparingly and controls the senses. On the ashṭamī he bathes, worships Bhagavān Sūrya, gives dakshiṇā to a brāhmaṇa, offers a homa of ghee in the fire, bows to Jagannātha, and prays.
The prayer
- “May that master of the devas, Vibhāvasu, by worshipping whom Sāvitrī Devī long ago made her wish fruitful, give me too the fruit I desire.”
- “May that Sūryadeva, by worshipping whom Devendra, fallen from his kingdom, regained his svarga and all he wished, grant my heart’s desire.”
- “May that Bhagavān Sūrya, by worshipping whom Diti gained all her wishes, be gracious and fulfil all my wishes.”
Having prayed so and completed the pūjā of Vivasvān, he eats havishya. The vrata runs through three spans of four months, from Phālguna, Āshāḍha and Kārtika, with karavīra, jātī and red water-lilies, kṛshṇāguru, guggulu and the mahāṅga dhūpa, and water from a cow’s horn, well water and cow’s urine.
The phala
Brahmā says that when Bhagavān Sūrya is pleased he gives the desired fruit without hindrance. Through this vrata Indra gained lordship of the three worlds, Sāvitrī and Aditi gained sons, the Yadus their wishes and Dhaumya the Vedas; Bhagavān Vishṇu gained Lakshmī Devī, Śaṅkara purification, and Brahmā the state of Pitāmaha. The sonless gain a son, the sick health, a maiden a good husband; the keeper gains all his wishes and is not born childless, poor or pitiless. Radiant like Sūrya, on a golden ratha, he reaches Goloka and Sūryaloka and rejoices there for many years, and returning becomes a king like Indra.
