Saubhāgyāshṭaka

Saubhāgyāshṭaka · saubhāgya-ashṭaka, “the eight things of saubhāgya”

Grammar: neuter noun; saubhāgya with ashṭaka (a group of eight).

Meaning: the eight things of saubhāgya, offered to the Devī and given in vratas.

In the scriptures: Bhagavān Śrī Kṛshṇa tells Yudhishṭhira of it in these places.

  • Before the Devī: the eight are jīrā, kaḍuhuṇḍa, apūpa, flowers, pure nishpāva, lavaṇa, sugar and guḍa (Chapters 18–19).
  • Their origin: eight things arose, named Saubhāgyāshṭaka: ikshu, stavarāja, nishpāva, rājidhānya, cow’s milk and its products, the kusumbha flower, kuṅkuma and lavaṇa. After the pūjā it is set before Bhagavān Śiva and Devī Pārvatī with the words umāmaheśvarau prīyetām. In the morning it is given to brāhmaṇas, with golden images of Devī Gaurī and Bhagavān Śaṅkara, with the words lalitā prīyatām (Chapter 25).
  • In the Ananta Tṛtīyā: the saubhāgyāshṭaka items are given to the brāhmaṇī (Chapter 26).
