Jambūmārga

Jambūmārga · jambū-mārga, “the way of the jambū”

Jambūmārga is a holy land where crores of munis performed tapas in Satya Yuga, and the printed text of the Bhavishya Purāṇa glosses its name as Bharuch. It held the āśrama-maṇḍala of Bhṛgu Maharshi on the peak Ṭaṇṭāvi of the mountain Nāmavratadharā, and here the marks of four hooves fell upon a rock, an excellent tīrtha of the Narmadā. Bhagavān Śrī Kṛshṇa tells of it to Yudhishṭhira in the account of the Govatsa Dvādaśī.

The tapovana of the munis

In Satya Yuga, in the holy Jambūmārga, on the beautiful peak named Ṭaṇṭāvi of the mountain named Nāmavratadharā, crores of munis performed tapas, wishing for the darśana of Bhagavān Śaṅkara. That tapovana was adorned with incomparable divine forests. It was the āśrama-maṇḍala of Bhṛgu Maharshi, full of many kinds of deer and monkeys, and lions and all the other wild animals lived there together, joyful and without fear.

The tīrtha of the hoof-marks

To give darśana to those munis, Bhagavān Śaṅkara came in the guise of an old brāhmaṇa, and Jagan-mātā Pārvatī took the form of a beautiful cow with her calf. He gave the cow into the care of the kulapati Bhṛgu and withdrew from sight, and then appeared in the form of a tiger. In this līlā the cow with her calf leapt and ran, and the marks of her four hooves fell in the middle of a rock. In the sky the devas and kinnaras bowed in praise to the tiger and the cow.

That mark on the rock is clearly visible to this day, and it is an excellent tīrtha of the Narmadā. At the sound of the terrible bell obtained from Brahmā, which the munis rang, the tiger went away, and the brāhmaṇas gave the name Ḍhuṇḍāgiri. Then Bhagavān Śaṅkara gave up the tiger form and appeared there in his own form.

The phala

  • Whoever touches the Śivaliṅga of Śambhutīrtha here is freed from go-hatyā.
  • By bathing at that mahātīrtha in Jambūmārga one is freed from brahmahatyā and other pāpas.
  • Humans who have darśana of Ḍhuṇḍāgiri become Rudra-svarūpa themselves.
