Nirukta of Jayadeva
Nirukta, “the explanation of words”
The Nirukta of Jayadeva is the Vedāṅga Nirukta, the explanation of Vedic words, that the poet Jayadeva composed. The Pratisarga Parva of the Bhavishya Purāṇa tells of it in the account that Sūta gives of what Devaguru Bṛhaspati told Indra.
The account
When Indra and the devas worshipped Bhagavān Sūrya, he was pleased and said: “O devas, I shall be born in Bilvagrāma in Vaṅga-deśa as the Niruktakāra, the maker of the Nirukta, and shall be renowned as Jayadeva, the crest-jewel of poets.” In time Jayadeva took up vairāgya and lived in the forest doing bhajana, and by the command of Bhagavān Jagannātha the brāhmaṇa Satyavrata gave him his daughter Padmāvatī, who served him for many years. The Pratisarga Parva tells that in the time of samādhi Jayadeva composed the Vedāṅga Nirukta, and restored the Pāṇini-śāstra.
