Liṅgasūtra

Liṅgasūtra · liṅga-sūtra, “the sūtras on gender”

The Liṅgasūtra, the sūtras on the gender of words, is one of the four parts of the Vyākaraṇa-śāstra composed by Pāṇini.

Pāṇini composes it

The Pratisarga Parva of the Bhavishya Purāṇa tells that Pāṇini, son of Sāma, shamed by the disciples of Kaṇāda, went on tīrtha-yātrā and did tapas at Kedāra, meditating on Bhagavān Śiva. When twenty-eight days had passed, Bhagavān Śiva appeared; Pāṇini praised him and asked for the supreme knowledge of śāstra, and Mahādeva gave him the sūtras made of all the letters, beginning a i u ṇ. Pāṇini went home, composed the Vyākaraṇa-śāstra as the Sūtrapāṭha, the Dhātupāṭha, the Gaṇapāṭha and the Liṅgasūtra, and attained the supreme nirvāṇa.
