Kārpāsācala Mantra

Kārpāsācala Mantra, “the mantra of the mountain of cotton”

The Kārpāsācala Mantra is the mantra the giver says to the Kārpāsācala, the mountain of cotton, when he makes that gift. Śrī Kṛshṇa teaches it to Yudhishṭhira in the Uttara Parva of the Bhavishya Purāṇa, among the ten mountain gifts.

The setting

Śrī Kṛshṇa calls the gift of the cotton mountain the best of all gifts and most dear to all the devas, a great dāna made with care and śraddhā to lift up one’s kula. A mountain of twenty bhāras of cotton is the best, ten the middle, five the ordinary, and one of small means, leaving miserliness, may give a mountain of one bhāra. All the materials are gathered as for the Dhānyaparvata, and the gift is made in the morning when the night has passed.

The mantra

In meaning: “Kārpāsācala! Since in this world you alone are ever the covering of the bodies of all people, namaskāra to you. Destroy my mass of pāpas.”

The phala

One who gives the Kārpāsācala in the presence of Bhagavān Śiva dwells for one kalpa in Rudraloka, and afterwards becomes a fortunate king on earth.
