Jayantī Names of Sūrya

Jayantī Nāma

The Jayantī names are four names of Bhagavān Sūrya said in prayer at every pāraṇā of the Jayantī Saptamī vrata, to make him gracious. In the Brahma Parva of the Bhavishya Purāṇa, Brahmā teaches them in the account of the Jayantī Kalpa.

The setting

The śukla saptamī of Māgha is called Jayantī; it gives puṇya, removes pāpa and brings good. The vratī eats once on the pañcamī, keeps nakta on the shashṭhī, fasts on the saptamī and breaks the fast on the ashṭamī, in four pāraṇās through the year. In the first, Sūrya is worshipped with śivamallī flowers, kuṅkuma, laḍḍus and ghee dhūpa, with pañcagavya taken; in the second with lotuses, white sandal, guggulu and sweets of jaggery; in the third with red sandal, jātī flowers, Vijaya dhūpa and ghee sweets, with kuśa water taken; in the fourth with red karavīra flowers, red sandal, the Amṛta dhūpa and pāyasa, with buttermilk taken.

The names

In all the pāraṇās the vratī prays: “May Citrabhānu, Bhānu, Bhāskara and Āditya be pleased.”

  1. Citrabhānu, of bright rays.
  2. Bhānu, the shining one.
  3. Bhāskara, the maker of light.
  4. Āditya, the son of Aditi.

At the close of the year, having worshipped Bhagavān Sūrya, honoured the brāhmaṇas and the reader of the Purāṇa, the vratī says: “In the acts of dharma, of artha and of kāma, O Devadeva, may I always have victory.”

The phala

He who worships Vibhāvasu on that tithi by this rule reaches the highest state. One who wants sons gets sons, one who wants wealth gets wealth, and one afflicted is freed of all disease. He gains the fruit of victory, is freed from all pāpas, and goes to Sūryaloka in a divine vimāna, shining with tejas like Sūrya‘s.
