Nīlotpala · nīla-utpala, “the blue lotus”

Grammar: neuter noun; a compound of nīla (blue) and utpala (lotus).

Meaning: the blue lotus.

In the scriptures: the Brahma Parva of the Bhavishya Purāṇa says that lotuses, kaluvas, red kaluvas and nīlotpalas are always dear to Bhagavān Sūrya (Bhavishya Purāṇa, Brahma Parva, Chapter 115). In the Uttara Parva, Kālī, daughter of Daksha Prajāpati, has the colour of the nīla lotus (Chapter 20). The nīla lotus is first of the twelve flowers, month by month, for the pleasure of Bhagavān Śiva and Pārvatī (Chapter 22). In the Lalitā Shashṭhī vrata it is among the flowers of the pushpāñjali (Chapter 41). In the Rohiṇīcandraśayana vrata the nīla-kamala is the second of the flowers for Bhagavān Vishṇu in the form of Candra (Chapter 206).
