Mayūra

Mayūra · mayūra, “the peacock”

Grammar: masculine noun: the peacock.

Meaning: the peacock, the bird of Kārttikeya.

In the scriptures: the Bhavishya Purāṇa says that one who sees a mayūra, a vṛshabha, a siṃha, a krauñca or a kapi in house, field or tree, even by accident, and bows to it, loses the pāpas of hundreds of brahmahatyās. Keeping them brings kīrti (fame), and seeing them increases wealth and long life. The mayūra is the form of Brahmā (Madhyama Parva, Bhāga 2, Chapters 1–2).

In the pūjā of Kārttikeya, the goat, the cock, the peacock and his mother Bhagavatī Pārvatī are worshipped, directly or as gold images (Uttara Parva, Chapter 42).
