Gaurī (Girl of Eight)

Gaurī, “a girl of eight years”

Grammar: feminine noun.

Meaning: a girl of eight years. (For Devī Gaurī, the wife of Bhagavān Śiva, see her own page.)

In the scriptures: Sūta tells the ṛshis the account of the Sādhu Vaṇik in the Satyanārāyaṇa Vrata. By the grace of Bhagavān Satyanārāyaṇa a daughter, Kalāvatī, was born to the merchant and his wife Līlāvatī, and she grew like a digit of the moon. When she came of age to marry, her father began to seek a match for her. Here a verse printed with the account gives the names of a girl by her age:

अष्टवर्षा भवेद्गौरी नववर्षा च रोहिणी ।
दशवर्षा भवेत् कन्या ततः प्रौढा रजस्वला ॥

ashṭavarshā bhavedgaurī navavarshā ca rohiṇī |
daśavarshā bhavet kanyā tataḥ prauḍhā rajasvalā ||

A girl of eight years is gaurī, of nine years rohiṇī, of ten years kanyā; after that she is prauḍhā, rajasvalā.
