Dīpa-vṛksha

Dīpa-vṛksha · dīpa-vṛksha, “the lamp-tree”

Grammar: masculine noun; a compound of dīpa (lamp) and vṛksha (tree).

Meaning: a lamp-tree.

In the scriptures: Bhagavān Śrī Kṛshṇa tells Yudhishṭhira of the Dīpotsava. On Kārtika amāvāsyā, at pradosha, rows of lamps are lit and many kinds of dīpa-vṛksha are set up. At that time rākshasas roam the world. To remove the fear of them, excellent maidens throw taṇḍula on the lamp-trees and perform nīrājana with lamps (Bhavishya Purāṇa, Uttara Parva, Chapter 140).
