Caitya Vṛksha

Caitya Vṛksha, “the caitya tree”

Grammar: masculine noun; caitya with vṛksha (tree).

Meaning: a caitya tree; the text glosses it as a pīpala or a tree well known in the village.

In the scriptures: Bhagavān Śrī Kṛshṇa tells Yudhishṭhira of the Prapā-dāna, the gift of a water stall. At the start of Caitra one builds a maṇḍapa with thick, cool shade, and a caitya tree is among the places named for it, with the middle of the town, the roadside, a devālaya, a waterless place and the forest.
