Bhogavarti

Bhogavarti · bhoga-varti, “the wick of enjoyment”

Grammar: feminine noun, a compound of bhoga and varti (wick).

Meaning: the wick of yellow cloth for Bhagavān Vishṇu.

In the scriptures: Śrī Kṛshṇa tells Yudhishṭhira that the wick of each deity has its own name. The wick of yellow cloth for Bhagavān Vishṇu is the Bhogavarti. Lamps with such wicks are given after the pūjā of the devatā, and the phala of dīpadāna by this vidhi is a radiant vimāna to svarga, where the giver lives until pralaya (Bhavishya Purāṇa, Uttara Parva, Chapter 130).
