Saura Purāṇa

Saura Purāṇa, “the Purāṇa of Sūrya”

The Saura Purāṇa, the Purāṇa of Sūrya, is named in the Uttara Parva of the Bhavishya Purāṇa as a text to be heard in the Śarkarā Saptamī vrata.

In the Śarkarā Saptamī

Śrī Kṛshṇa tells Yudhishṭhira the Śarkarā Saptamī vrata, kept on the saptamī of the bright half of Vaiśākha. The devotee bathes in water with white sesame, wears white, draws an eight-petalled lotus on the vedi with kuṅkuma, and worships Bhagavān Sūrya with the mantra savitre namaḥ. A vessel full of śarkarā (sugar) is set on a pot of water, with a horse made of gold. After invoking and worshipping Sūrya, the devotee does japa of the Saurasūkta or listens to the Saura Purāṇa. On the ashṭamī the materials are given to a brāhmaṇa who knows the Veda.
