Veṇikā

Veṇikā · veṇikā

Veṇikā is a village on the bank of the Gaṅgā. Bhagavān Śrī Kṛshṇa tells Yudhishṭhira of it, in the Uttara Parva of the Bhavishya Purāṇa, in the account of the Māyā of Bhagavān Vishṇu.

Nārada Muni asked Bhagavān Nārāyaṇa to show him his Māyā. Bhagavān Nārāyaṇa took the form of an old brāhmaṇa named Yajñaśarmā and went with Nārada to Jambūdvīpa. After visiting the vaiśya Sīrabhadra at Vidiśā, the two came on the way to the village of Veṇikā, where lived a poor brāhmaṇa named Gosvāmī, absorbed in the care of his farming. Bhagavān Nārāyaṇa said to him: “We have come from very far. We are now your guests. We are hungry; give us food.” Gosvāmī took both to his home, gave them bath and food, and arranged rest on a good bed. In the morning Bhagavān Nārāyaṇa said: “May Parameśvara make your farming fruitless, and may your progeny not increase,” and went on. When Nārada asked why, Bhagavān Nārāyaṇa said that he had given Gosvāmī such a blessing so that, not caught in the net of the world, he might gain mukti.
