Vipīta

Vipīta · vipīta

Vipīta is a Veda-knowing brāhmaṇa, called Muni, who comforted the preta Sīrabhadra. Bhagavān Śrī Kṛshṇa tells Yudhishṭhira of him in the Uttara Parva of the Bhavishya Purāṇa, in the glory of the Sukṛta Dvādaśī.

The vaiśya Sīrabhadra died and lived as a preta in a body of suffering in Vindhyāraṇya. One day in the hot season Vipīta saw that preta rolling in the sand of a river, scorched by the sun’s rays, blisters on all his limbs, his throat dry with thirst, his tongue hanging out, drawing long breaths. Seeing his state Vipīta felt great compassion and asked his account, and Sīrabhadra asked him for a means to be raised from that state.

Vipīta Muni said: “Sīrabhadra, ten births ago, wishing to do ārādhanā of Bhagavān Acyuta, you fasted on the Sukṛta Dvādaśī. By its power a very large part of this pāpa has already been destroyed. Now in a short time you will reach a good state.” Having comforted him, Vipīta Muni went to his āśrama, and Sīrabhadra, as the fruit of the dvādaśī vrata, attained moksha after a short time.
