Turushkas

Turushka · turushka

The Turushkas are a people. Sumantu Muni tells King Śatānīka, in the Brahma Parva of the Bhavishya Purāṇa, of the upavāsa vrata on the pratipat, the first tithi, dear to Brahmā. By it Viśvāmitra gained brāhmaṇatva from Brahmā in that very body. Sumantu Muni says that a kshatriya, a vaiśya or a śūdra who keeps the vrata on this tithi attains brāhmaṇatva, and that among the Haihayas, Tālajaṅghas, Turushkas, Yavanas and Śakas, those who kept this upavāsa vrata gained the brāhmaṇatva they desired.
