Darvā (Wife of Uśīnara)

Darvā

Darvā was one of the five wives of King Uśīnara of the line of Pūru, and the mother of his son Suvrata. Like Uśīnara’s other wives, she was born in a family of rājarshis, kings who lived like ṛshis.

Her place in the line of Uśīnara

Uśīnara, the son of Mahāmanas, was a king who knew dharma. He had five wives, all of rājarshi families: Nṛgā, Kṛmī, Navā, Darvā and Dṛshadvatī. In his old age, by the power of his tapas (austerity), Uśīnara had by them five sons, each an upholder of the line: Nṛga by Nṛgā, Kṛmi by Kṛmī, Nava by Navā, Suvrata by Darvā, and Śibi, lord of the Auśīnaras, by Dṛshadvatī.

From Nṛga came the Yaudheyas; Nava’s kingdom was called Navā; Kṛmi’s city was Kṛmilāpurī; and from Darvā’s son Suvrata came the Ambashṭhas.
