Jahnu
Jahnu
Jahnu was a king of the Pūru vaṃśa, the line of Pūru. He was the son of Ajamīḍha by his wife Keśinī. The Agni Purāṇa, in Agni Deva’s account of the Pūru vaṃśa, makes him the root of the line that came down through Ajakāśva, Balākāśva and Kuśika to Gādhi, who attained the state of Indra, and to Gādhi’s children, Satyavatī and Viśvāmitra. Jahnu himself had four sons: Suratha, Śrutasena, Ugrasena and Bhīmasena.
His birth in the Pūru vaṃśa
In the Pūru vaṃśa, Bharata, the son of Dushyanta and Śakuntalā, received Bharadvāja, the son of Bṛhaspati, as his son from the Marudgaṇas, and he became famous as Vitatha. To Vitatha’s son Suhotra was born Bṛhat, and to Bṛhat three sons were born: Ajamīḍha, Dvimīḍha and Purumīḍha.
Ajamīḍha had three wives, and a royal line came from each of them. To Ajamīḍha in his wife Keśinī was born Jahnu.
