Ilā (daughter of Matināra)
Ilā · ilā, “the earth”
Ilā, the daughter of King Matināra, is a woman of the Pūru line whom the Brahma Purāṇa honours as a brahmavādinī, one who speaks of Brahman. She was the wife of Taṃsu and the mother of the rājarshi Dharmanetra, and through him the grandmother of Dushyanta.
Her family
Sūta tells the munis the line of Ṛceyu, the son of Raudrāśva. Ṛceyu’s son was Matināra. Matināra had three sons, supremely righteous, of whom the text names Vasurodha and Subāhu; all of them knew the Vedas, were devoted to the brāhmaṇas and were true to their word. Matināra’s daughter was Ilā. Though a woman, she became a brahmavādinī.
She was the wife of Taṃsu, and their son was the rājarshi Dharmanetra, mighty, a brahmavādī and valiant. Dharmanetra’s wife was Upadānavī, and their four sons were Dushyanta, Sushmanta, Pravīra and Anagha.
