Nandā (Cow of the Churning)

Nandā · nandā, “she who gladdens”

Nandā is one of the five cows that arose together with amṛta at the churning of the Kshīra Sāgara. Śrī Kṛshṇa names them to Yudhishṭhira as Nandā, Subhadrā, Surabhi, Suśīlā and Bahulā, and they are called Lokamātās. They appeared for the good of the worlds and for the satisfaction of the devas. The devas gave these five wish-fulfilling cows to Jamadagni, Bharadvāja, Vasishṭha, Asita and Gautama Muni.
