Agnishvāttas
Agnishvātta
The Agnishvāttas are a class of Pitṛs. Sumantu Muni tells King Śatānīka that the Saumyas, the Barhishads and the Agnishvāttas, these three “fathers”, are the Pitṛs of living men.
In the Uttara Parva, Bhagavān Śrī Kṛshṇa teaches Yudhishṭhira the tarpaṇa. The devotee puts the yajñopavīta on the right shoulder, sits with the left knee on the ground, and with bhakti offers water mixed with sesame and sandal to the pitṛs named Agnishvātta, Barhishad, Havishmān, Ūshmapa, Sukālin, Bhauma, Somapa and Ājyapa.
