Duṇḍhirāja

Duṇḍhirāja · duṇḍhi-rāja, “Duṇḍhirāja, author of the Jātakābharaṇa”

Duṇḍhirāja is the author of the Jātakābharaṇa, a work of phalita jyotisha (the astrology of results). The Pratisarga Parva of the Bhavishya Purāṇa tells that he was born at Kāśī from Skandha, whom Bhagavān Gaṇeśa produced from his own mouth, and that he became a śishya of Śaṅkarācārya.

His account

Sūta tells a muni that, hearing this from Bṛhaspati, Bhagavān Gaṇeśa produced Skandha from his own mouth. That Skandha, Īśvara in form, was born at Kāśī as the son of a daivajña dvija (a brāhmaṇa learned in jyotisha). On the earth he became famous as Duṇḍhirāja.

He composed a work of phalita jyotisha named Jātakābharaṇa. He came to Śaṅkarācārya for the protection of the Veda, and with a glad heart became his śishya, intent on service to his guru.
