Bhogasiṃha and Kelisiṃha
Bhogasiṃha Kelisiṃha · bhoga-siṃha keli-siṃha, “Bhogasiṃha and Kelisiṃha”
Bhogasiṃha and Kelisiṃha are the two divine sons in whom Bhagavān Vāmana was born in the Kali age, as the Pratisarga Parva of the Bhavishya Purāṇa tells. Sūta tells Śaunaka how Bali and his friend Kali came to Bhagavān Vāmana when Kali had been insulted by the line of Vātya. By the former half of his aṃśa Bhagavān Vāmana was born to the brāhmaṇa Kāmaśarmā and Devahūti on the Yamunā as these two brothers. They conquered the kings of Vātya’s line and bore the yoke of Kali from the city of Rahaḥkrīḍāvatī. Vyāsa then tells Manu what will come: they will take up yoga in Kalpakshetra, fight the Kaulakalpas for the Kinnaras, and go to Pātāla with the daityas.
The plea of Bali
The Pratisarga Parva of the Bhavishya Purāṇa tells that in distress Kali went to the daitya king Bali and told the whole account of the line of Vātya. Bali with his friend Kali came to Bhagavān Vāmana, bowed and said: “Surottama! Pleased with me, you made Kali for me. But that Kali has been insulted by the Vātya dvijas. Prabhu Vāmana! Only a little time is left for one caraṇa of Kaliyuga to pass. In this time the devas have ruled more than I. For my part, I gave up the rule of the earth because of Devendra’s māyā. So protect this Kali, my friend.”
The two sons
Then Bhagavān Vāmana Hari, by his pūrvārdha aṃśa (the former half of his portion), was born in the house of a brāhmaṇa named Kāmaśarmā, who lived on the bank of the Yamunā, from his wife Devahūti, as two divine sons. One was named Bhogasiṃha, the other Kelisiṃha.
They conquered the kings born of Vātya and came to Kalpakshetra. Living in the city named Rahaḥkrīḍāvatī, built by Maya, those two strong ones bore the yoke of Kali.
The second caraṇa of Kali
In time a great number of varṇasaṅkaras were produced in Kaliyuga, and they multiplied greatly, like birds on a tree. After two thousand years they brought the earlier humans to an end, and the second caraṇa of Kali came on earth. At this time the talk of the Kinnaras is current on earth. Those daitya-natured humans became only two and a half hands tall, their span was forty years, and they became without karma, like birds. At the end of the second caraṇa there will be no marriage, no kings, no one who strives and no one who does karma. The descendants of Bhogasiṃha and Kelisiṃha will remain on earth for a hundred and twenty-five thousand years.
Then Vyāsa spoke to Manu of what will come. In the second caraṇa of Kali, Bhogasiṃha and Kelisiṃha, arisen from the Vāmana aṃśa, will take up yoga-mārga, stay in Kalpakshetra, and increase the daitya party.
The war with the Kaulakalpas
When the third caraṇa of Kali comes, the Kinnaras will slowly perish from the earth. When twenty-six thousand years of it have passed, by the command of Rudra, Dhṛta Ṛshi will produce from Saurabhī, the nāga’s wife, very strong humans named Kaulakalpa, who will eat all the Kinnaras. Their span in Kali at that time will be twenty-six years.
The frightened Kinnaras will take refuge in the Vāmana aṃśa, and a terrible war will follow between Bhogasiṃha and Kelisiṃha and the Kaulakalpas. After fighting for ten years, Bhogasiṃha and all with him will be defeated. The Vāmana aṃśa will go to Pātāla with the daityas.
