Kāmya Vratas and the Rules of Vratas
A kāmya vrata is kept for a wish: health, beauty, a son, fortune in marriage, freedom from fear. This section gathers such vratas from the Matsya, Varāha, Bhavishya and other Purāṇas, with the weekday and month fasts and the general rules every vrata follows. The articles below describe them one by one.
The Agni Purāṇa, where Agni teaches the vratas one after another, also gives many vratas kept for a wish. Agni says these vratas give both bhukti (enjoyment in this world) and mukti (moksha). Among the vratas of days (Chapter 197) and the various vratas (Chapter 199) are the Dhenu Vrata and the Devī Vrata.
In the Agni Purāṇa
Dhenu Vrata
The Dhenu Vrata is the first of the vratas of days. One gives an ubhayamukhī cow, a cow in the act of calving, “two-faced”, together with a heap of gold, and keeps the payo-vrata, living on milk alone, for one day. One who keeps it gains the paramapada, the supreme abode.

Devī Vrata
In the various vratas, Agni teaches that one who eats pāyasa (rice cooked in milk) for a year and then gives two cows has kept the Devī Vrata, and becomes endowed with Śrī (prosperity). Agni names it among the vara vratas, the excellent vratas, of that chapter.
