Brahma Svarūpa in the Brahma Vaivarta Purāṇa

Brahma svarūpa means “the true nature of Brahman”, the one supreme reality behind everything. Chapter 28 of the Brahma Khaṇḍa of the Brahma Vaivarta Purāṇa contains Śiva’s teaching to Nārada on this subject. He gave it on Mount Kailāsa, after teaching Nārada the Āhnika (the daily routine of dharma).

Śiva explains how Parabrahman (the Supreme Brahman), the four chief devatās and the jīva (individual soul) are related to one another. The whole picture rests on Śrī Kṛshṇa as the ultimate reality.

The Teaching

In Chapter 28, after giving Nārada the Āhnika, Śiva taught him the nature of Brahman in this way.

Parabrahman is the all-pervading jyotis (light). This ultimate reality is Kṛshṇa.

From this Parabrahman come four forms. Each is a particular svarūpa (form or aspect) of the one ultimate reality:

DevatāSvarūpa (nature)
VishṇuPrāṇa-svarūpa: the form of the life-force
BrahmāMano-rūpa: the form of the mind
ŚivaJñāna-svarūpa: the form of knowledge
Śakti / DurgāPrakṛti-svarūpa: the form of nature

The jīva (individual soul) is a pratibimba (reflection) of the Paramātmā (Supreme Self). It is not the same as Parabrahman, yet it is not wholly separate either. Like a reflection, it shares the same basic light as the original.

What This Teaching Means

This is not a ranking of the devatās by importance; all four are equally honoured. Rather, it shows how each of the great devatās comes forth from the one Parabrahman, Kṛshṇa, as a particular way in which that one reality shows itself. It is striking that Śiva himself gives this teaching, and that he stresses that he is the jñāna-svarūpa (form of knowledge) of Kṛshṇa. This makes it one of the most important spiritual passages in the Brahma Khaṇḍa: the teacher of this picture places himself within it.

In the same chapter, this teaching is followed by a detailed description of Goloka, Kṛshṇa’s supreme abode. This confirms that Parabrahman is not a formless idea. It is a personal and loving reality with its own eternal home.
