Śyāma (son of Śūra)

Śyāma, “the dark one”

Śyāma is one of the ten sons of Śūra in the line of Kroshṭu, son of Yadu, and so a brother of Vasudeva Ānakadundubhi.

His family

Sūta tells the munis that Devamīḍha begot Śūra on Asiknī, and Śūra begot ten heroic sons on Bhojyā. Vasudeva was born first; after him came Devabhāga, Devaśravas, Anādhṛshṭi, Kanavaka, Vatsavān, Gṛñjama, Śyāma, Śamīka and Gaṇḍūsha, and there were five daughters, Pṛthukīrti, Pṛthā, Śrutadevā, Śrutaśravā and Rājādhidevī.

Telling the families of these brothers, the Purāṇa says that Śamīka, son of Śyāma, ruled the kingdom; though born in the Bhoja line, he performed the rājasūya, and he had a son, Ajātaśatru, destroyer of enemies.
