Ānarta is a king of the line of Kāśī, the son of Vibhu and the father of Sukumāra. The Brahma Purāṇa names him in its accounts of the kings of Kāśī.

In the line of Kāśī

The Purāṇa gives the line of the Kāśī kings after Alarka: Alarka’s son was Sannati, and from him the line runs through Sunītha, Kshema, Ketumanta, Suketu and Dharmaketu to Satyaketu. Satyaketu’s son was Vibhu, Vibhu’s son was Anarta, Anarta’s son was Sukumāra, and Sukumāra’s son was Dhṛshṭaketu. (Chapter 11)

Telling the line again, after Alarka, who killed the rākshasa Kshemaka and built the city of Vārāṇasī, the Sūta says to the munis: Alarka’s son was Kshemaka; his son Varshaketu; his son Vibhu; his son Ānarta; his son Sukumāra; and his son Satyaketu, an embodiment of dharma. (Chapter 13)
