Parjanya-sūkta
Parjanya-sūkta · parjanya-sūkta, “the sūkta of Parjanya”
The Parjanya-sūkta is the Vedic sūkta of Parjanya, the deva of rain-cloud, used in the havana of the halapaṅkti-dāna, the gift of a row of ten ploughs with land. Śrī Kṛshṇa teaches this dāna to Yudhishṭhira in the Uttara Parva of the Bhavishya Purāṇa. The text names the sūkta and its use.
Its place in the rite
Ten Veda-knowing brāhmaṇas of good conduct are invited. In a maṇḍapa of ten hastas, with one or two kuṇḍas on the east side, they perform havana with palāśa samidhs, ghee, black sesame and milk, with the vyāhṛtis, the Parjanya-sūkta, the Āditya-sūkta and the Rudra mantras. Then the yajamāna bathes, puts on white cloth, sets the ploughs on the seven grains and yokes the bullocks, and gives the land and the ploughs to the brāhmaṇas.
The phala
One who gives a halapaṅkti goes to svarga with his twenty-one kulas, for seven births suffers no poverty or disease and becomes a ruler of the earth, and dwells in Śivaloka for as many thousand years as there are clods raised by the plough and hairs on the bulls.
