Words of Rudra and Vishṇu at the Paring
Rudra Vishṇu Vacana · rudra-vishṇu-vacana, “the words of Rudra and Vishṇu”
The words of Rudra and Vishṇu at the paring are the praise that Rudra, Vishṇu and the other devatās offered Bhagavān Sūrya while Viśvakarmā carved his body. Sumantu Muni tells it to King Śatānīka in the Brahma Parva of the Bhavishya Purāṇa. In this kalpa the Purāṇa praises Sūrya as the supreme.
The setting
Sūryadeva’s mind was on Saṃjñā Devī, who had gone to her father’s house. Brahmā came and told him that his father-in-law Viśvakarmā could set his form right, and by Brahmā’s command Viśvakarmā mounted the śāṇa (the grindstone) and carved his body little by little into a form of beauty. Brahmā, with the devas and maharshis, delighted him with secret stotras, saying: “O Jagannātha, like the cool moon to the lands of puṇya, Devādhideva of all the worlds, svasti to you, may there be śānti!”
The words
Rudra, Vishṇu and the other devatās praised him: “Deva, Divaspati, lord of the sky! By this carving may your tejas increase!”
What followed
Indra came and praised Sūrya as he was carved: “O Jagatpati, victory to you; you are the giver of tattva.” The Saptarshis led by Viśvāmitra blessed him with “svasti”, the Vālakhilyas praised him with Vedic mantras, the vidyādharas, yakshas, rākshasas and pannagas prayed that his tejas become bearable to all beings, and the gandharvas sang and the apsarās danced.
