Vālakhilyas’ Stuti to Sūrya

Vālakhilya Stuti, “the praise by the Vālakhilyas”

The Vālakhilyas’ Stuti to Sūrya is the praise that the Vālakhilya ṛshis offered to Bhagavān Sūrya, blessing him with Vedic mantras, while Viśvakarmā was paring his tejas. Sumantu Muni tells it to King Śatānīka in the Brahma Parva of the Bhavishya Purāṇa.

The setting

Sūrya Deva, his mind on Saṃjñā Devī, who had gone to her father’s house, wished his form set right. Brahmā came and told him that his father-in-law Viśvakarmā could do it, and by Brahmā’s command Viśvakarmā mounted the grindstone and little by little carved the body of Bhāskara into a beautiful form. Brahmā with the devas and maharshis, Rudra, Vishṇu, Indra and the Saptarshis led by Viśvāmitra all praised Sūrya as he was carved. Then the Vālakhilyas blessed him with Vedic mantras and delighted him with this stuti.

The stuti

  1. “O Lokanātha, for those who attain mukti, you are mukti.”
  2. “For those who meditate, you are the one to be meditated on.”
  3. “You are the goal of all beings.”
  4. “All is established in you.”
  5. “Jagatpati, may all our people have happiness.”
  6. “All this world comes forth from you, and dissolves in you.”
  7. “You alone became two, and became many.”
  8. “Without doubt, this world was created by you alone, and is awakened by you.”

After them the vidyādharas, yakshas, rākshasas and pannagas bowed with joined palms and said: “O Bhūtabhāvana, may your tejas become bearable to all beings.” The gandharvas sang, the apsarās danced, instruments sounded in thousands, and Viśvakarmā gave polish to Sūrya‘s tejas.

The phalaśruti

Bhānudeva is the cause of snow, of water, of dharma and of time, and is praised by Brahmā, Vishṇu and Maheśvara. The one who hears this account of the paring of Bhānudeva’s tejas goes, when his life ends, to Sūryaloka.
