Mādhava, Disciple of Mukunda

Mādhava

Mādhava is one of the twenty disciples of the brāhmaṇa Mukunda, who performed tapas at Prayāga. The Pratisarga Parva of the Bhavishya Purāṇa tells that he followed his guru on the path he took, and was born again and became famous as Vaijavāk.

His former and his new birth

Sūta tells Śaunaka that Mukunda, an excellent brāhmaṇa, was performing tapas at Prayāga with his twenty disciples. When Mukunda offered his life as an āhuti into the fire, his twenty disciples followed the path of their guru.

The text gives seven of them as his beloved disciples of the former birth, who were born again and came to the court of Mukunda in his new birth as Akbara: Keśava, Mādhava, Madhu, Devāpi, Somapā, Sūra and Madana. Keśava became Gānasena. Mādhava became famous as Vaijavāk.
