Śubhāvatī was the paṭarānī (chief queen) of King Havyavāhana of the Candravaṃśa. Bhagavān Śrī Kṛshṇa tells Yudhishṭhira of her in the Uttara Parva of the Bhavishya Purāṇa, when he asks for a dāna that brings wealth, sons and saubhāgya.
Havyavāhana’s kingdom had no disturbance and no enemy, yet through the karma of a former birth he had no mantrī, no son, no friend and no helping kinsman. Once Pippalāda Muni came to the house. Śubhāvatī honoured him with śraddhā with pādya, arghya and the rest, seated him, and asked: “Munīśvara, we have received this kingdom free of thorns, but why have we not received a mantrī, friends, sons and the like?”
Pippalāda Muni said: “In a former birth you gave a kingdom in dāna, and that has come to you. But you kept no bond with friends, servants and the like. So how would these come to you in this birth?”
Śubhāvatī replied: “What happened in a former birth has passed. Now tell me some vrata, dāna, upavāsa, mantra or siddha-yoga by which I may receive sons, wealth, friends and servants.” The muni told her of the mahādāna named Āpāka. As he said, Queen Śubhāvatī gave the Āpāka-dāna, and she received sons, friends, wealth and servants.
